When do baby colic start?

When do baby colic start?

Infant colic is a benign disorder suffered by about 40% of newborns. We say it is benign because babies gain weight, are healthy and is not something that endangers the health of the baby. However, it is a situation that makes parents suffer a lot because they can detect the pain in the crying of their baby. As parents, all we want is to help our children not to suffer and, ultimately, it is a natural impulse.

The scientific definition of colic is: episodes of intense and inconsolable crying that usually appear in the evening, accompanied by movements of shrinking of the legs and reddening of the skin, which do not have to be daily, but that occur at least 2-3 times a week and for several weeks. Wessel defined that it was colic if they cried more than 3 hours a day, for more than 3 days a week for more than 3 weeks.

A curious thing about colic is the period of time in which it develops. Colic is usually very limited in time and usually begins at two weeks of life. It can be extended between three or four months.

Every baby is different and there can always be an exception. But, it has been proven that babies suffering from colic usually take about two weeks to live to present the disorder. In fact, in the case of premature babies, colic usually begins at two weeks of corrected life as well.

There are several currents that try to explain why colic appear and that would try to make sense while waiting for its appearance at two weeks of life. Find some of them in the following posts:
